Happy news to the IIT aspirants in the United Arab Emirates! The Indian government will set up an Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in the UAE. This will be the first time an IIT will be set up outside India and is part of the India-UAE trade treaty signed on February 18. The treaty signed between the countries is sure to provide immense opportunities to IIT aspirants in the UAE who have to travel to India to claim their seats after getting through the IIT-JEE entrance examinations.
The IITs are autonomous public technical and research institutes that are located across India and come under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Education, Government of India. The Institutes of Technology Act, 1961 lists twenty-three institutes. Each IIT is autonomous, linked to the others through a common council (IIT Council), which oversees their administration. The Minister of Education is the ex officio Chairperson of the IIT Council. As of 2021, the total number of seats for undergraduate programs in all IITs is 16,234.
